Akuru means “letter” or “script.”
It represents the written word — carefully formed, thoughtfully placed.
I’m Rika Hemachandra — a writer with a background in architecture and design management.
For over twenty years I worked within the built environment, shaping spaces designed to endure. Now, I apply that same discipline to stories.
Buildings are documented before they disappear. Art is archived before it fades. But the lives that shape families — the voices, the turning points, the quiet resilience — are often left unrecorded.
Architecture preserves buildings. Biography preserves lives. Akuru exists to preserve them.
My Approach
Biography writing is not simply about recording events. It is about preserving meaning. Every project begins with listening.
Through guided conversation, patient questioning and careful structure, I help individuals retrace their steps — childhood memories, migrations, career milestones, relationships, lessons learned.
“Many clients begin by saying, ‘There’s nothing particularly interesting about me.’ And yet, almost always, there is.”
Often it is the everyday decisions, the sacrifices, the risks taken quietly, the traditions carried forward — that hold the deepest significance for future generations.
My role is not to dramatise a life. It is to honour it. This is collaborative work. Drafts are shared. Edits are welcomed. Nothing is final until it feels true to you.
What Clients Often Ask
Privacy & Ethics
This work is built on trust. Every biography entrusted to Akuru is handled with discretion and care. All recordings and materials are stored securely and managed in accordance with UK data protection standards.
You remain in control of your narrative — what is included, what is omitted, and how your story is presented.
Discretion is not an add-on. It is foundational.
A Quiet Investment in Legacy
Stories shape families. They shape identity. They shape understanding. When a life is documented with care, it becomes more than memory — it becomes inheritance.
If you are considering preserving a story — for yourself or someone you love — I would be honoured to begin the conversation.
